Characterization of Max

The character Max is a fighter.  He fought for thrills in his fist-fighting days, and he also fought against annihilation through his endurance and attitude.  The Nazi Party tried to beat him and other Jewish people down and many of them were slaughtered.  Despite his fear and perilous situation, Max fought to survive.  He still expressed positive thoughts and feelings in his artwork.  He continued to enjoy things like his time with Liesl.  The Nazis kept punching and Max kept standing up to them.

If you were a Jew in Nazi Germany and didn't fight - if you just hung your head and accepted your fate, you died. The ones who fought to survive, physically and mentally, were the ones who survived.
