During The Book Thief, Liesel learns to read in her basement with her Papa, later goes on to read books, and even write her own. Do you think that she had a spark to become a great reader and writer all along, and learning to read and write was just the catalyst? Do you think that she was instead shaped and sculpted through her experiences on Himmel Street, and the death of her brother?

Liesel’s circumstances definitely led to her need for literature. Without her brother’s death Liesel would have never stolen a book, she took the book to have something that reminded her of Werner. Once Papa taught her to read she clung to books because it gave her hope and an opportunity to almost escape from reality.
