Death has such a depressing job so he uses colors in the sky and people's personalities to distract him do you think Max asks about the sky everyday to distract him from his reality as well? Or does Max just use the topic of weather to start a conversation with Liesel.

I definitely agree that Death uses colors as a way of distraction toward the fact that he has a very grim responsibility/job. I personally believe that Max asks Liesel about the color of the sky as a way to divert all of his attention on his harsh realities. Max already has many talking points to discuss with Liesel so I don't believe him asking about the sky is a way to start a conversation with her. However, I think that Max knows how much it is helping not only himself to distract from reality but also Liesel when he asks her to tell him about the weather. Because he is giving her a job to do consistently and it is just about the only stability Liesel had in her life at the time. "'Could you go up and tell me how the weather looks?' Naturally, Liesel hurried up the stairs" (Zusak 249).
