Throughout the novel the author creates an ever lasting bond between the two characters of Liesel and Max. The author takes two characters each with their own complicated background story, and develops a fervid friendship. In the novel it says, "Liesel, in the act of watching, was already noticing the similarities between this stranger and herself. They both arrived in a state of agitation on Himmel Street. They both nightmares" (Zusak 206). In what other ways are the two characters within this friendship similar? How are they different?

This is a really good thing to point out. Max and Liesel have so many similarities, you could guess they were related. They both love to read and write, they are both very curious people, and they have what Sophie already pointed out. Besides from some obvious differences as gender, nationalities, and age, they also have very different minds. Liesel likes to think about other people and who THEY are. Max likes to think about others, but himself most often. So yes they have differences, but are so much alike.

Throughout the novel, Max and Liesel are able to bond over their love of books, writing and sharing stories. The two also can be seen as "fighters." On one hand, Liesel had to suffer the loss of not only her mother but also her brother and on the other hand, Max has it hard because he is a Jew living in Nazi Germany. He's had to fight through oppression and fought to save his life as he tries to hide. Moreover, the pair is also different is some ways. Being a jew, Max does not have the freedom, rights, and privileges someone like Liesel could have. For instance, Liesel can roam the streets and attend school and she can feel safe in her own home. Lastly, Liesel came to Himmel Street looking for a better life and opportunities whereas Max jeopardizes those chances and ultimately puts peoples lives in danger who try to help him.
