I know a lot of questions are about Death but I was wondering why he saw the colors he did when there was a death. Some red, black, white. Do the colors represent the manner in which a person died, what the people in the surrounding areas are reacting, or is it just randomly assigned by the author?

In general red and black are commonly associated with Death and mourning. As for white I don't know if it has a direct relationship to the death that is happening in the book but for red and black I believe that is why those colors are seen by Death when there was a death.

The use of colors, and the fact that they appeal to Death is what I believe to be Death trying to understand the human race. Death states on many occasions that he cannot produce an objective stance on the human race as a whole because of the polarity of it. While some humans are kind-hearted, there are just as many with evil and hate in their hearts. The association of colors might be Death trying to connect to humans through something he understands, nature.
