Modern media portrays Death as a black and dark character. Yet, throughout the book, Death uses vivid colors to describe the setting and feel of the moment. Why do you think that Death uses colors to descride a setting, character, or emotion?

Death does this to show that he is not how the media portrays him. Throughout the book, we experience Death as he goes through different emotions. The different colors show that Death isn't only a dark killer. He also can experience sadness, anger, happiness, regret; all of the basic emotions. This tells us that Death is more human-like than we think, and he is not a bad guy at all.

In the beginning of the book, Death says that he distracts himself from his job or that he vacations "in increments. In colors". The author portrays Death as very human-like being able to feel emotions such as guilt, pity, and sadness. Because Death is able to feel emotions, has the worst job ever that takes a huge emotional toll, and never gets a vacation, he uses vivid colors to keep himself sane so he can continue his job "I deliberately seek out the colors to keep my mind off of them" (Zusak 5).
