The big over-arching thing that really characteriszes Rudy is the Jesse Owens Incident, where he smears himself in charcoal and runs a 100 meter dash. I believe that this moment is used to characterize Rudy as a different kid then all the others. I was wondering, what how do you think this characterizes Rudy? Why does Zusak always refer back to this to when a passage has to do with Rudy?

I thought that that scene showed Rudy's innocence and naivety. Even though his family was affiliated with the Nazi Party he still passionately admired Jesse Owens because it didn't occur to him that he should dislike him because of his race. Even though Rudy's actions were definitely out of the ordinary, he looked up to Jesse Owens the same way any kid would look up to their favorite athlete and want to emulate them.

I agree completely. Rudy doesn't understand why color or religion should have any effect on how people are treated. He doesn't understand the real world, or the big picture. He idolizes Jesse Owens and doesn't understand why he shouldn't, because he isn't aware of the racism that was going on during that time.
