When Liesel first arrives at the Hubbermans house, she attributes kindness with her foster father's eyes, which helped build trust between Hans and Liesel. How does Hans earn Liesels trust? Does Liesel having a better relationship with Hans affect her relationship with Rosa?

Hans gained Leisel's trust by being kind to her and helping her pursue her interest in reading. His kindness was the opposite of Rosa's tough love approach, this contrast drew Leisel to him because he made her feel safe and comforted. Rosa was definitely more intimidating, especially at first, while Hans made an effort to relate to Leisel and make her feel welcome.

Hans established a strong trusting relationship with Leisel when he helped her with her nightmares about her brother. Hans passion with helping Leisel with her reading further established a tight bond between the two. This can be seen when Hans spent money on books for Leisel which irritated Rosa because it wasn't used on food for the family. Leisel didn't have the same relationship with Rosa because of the way Rosa treated her. Rosa was abrasive and harsh to Leisel while Hans was calm and loving.

Hans immediately earns Liesel's trust by comforting her in the wake of her endless nightmares. Liesel was in a dark place, and Hans was the shining light that pulled her out of that darkness through literature. Literary works were introduced to Leisel by Hans, and discovering the power of words together strengthened their bond immensely. Hans treated Liesel with books, to the dismay of Rosa. This action expresses the instantaneous connection between the pair, as Hans was willing to anger his beloved wife for a young girl he had just met and taken under his wing. The love Liesel receives from her foster parents holds a sharp contrast, and Rosa's tough, intimidating exterior drove a discomposed Liesel into the arms of Hans, desperate for his kind demeanor and welcoming actions. This may have driven a wedge between Liesel and Rosa, as Liesel and Hans shared an unbreakable bond that Rosa was not tuned to. Rosa expresses her affection for Liesel in a busque fashion that was more difficult to decipher as love than Hans' outward fondness for the girl.
