Rudy and Liesel share a special bond that evolves throughout the novel. On page 52, Death states "The only thing worse than a boy who hates you is a boy who loves you." What kind of love do you think Rudy had for Liesel? How do you think their relationship changed as the plot progressed?

I think that Rudy loved Liesel in more than a friend way, and Liesel didn't feel the same for him. Throughout the book Rudy asks Liesel for a kiss, but she never gives it to him, until the end. The last time they see eachother is in the forest, and Liesel wants Rudy to kiss her but she doesn't act on it. She later regrets this decision after Rudy dies, and she never had a chance to really kiss him. Towards the end of the novel, Liesel realizes how much Rudy means to her, and she starts to feel about Rudy the same way he feels about her.
