Death states, “I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.” To what extent do we see the ugliness and beauty of humans in the novel The Book Thief?

The best and worst of humans is strongly represented in The Book Thief in different ways. The evil and darkness in humans is represented by the Nazis and Hitler. Their ugliness and influence of it on others is clearly viewed by the readers and Death. However, the influence of the Reich can't make it into the minds of the beautiful people in the book. Leisel, Hans and Rudy show true innocence and goodness in their hearts that is unphased by Hitler's brainwashing. One example was when Rudy gave the dying enemy pilot the teddy bear out of pure compassion and his true goodness. It exemplifies the true best in humans.
