In the novel the reader can constantly find Marie escaping to the ocean. The ocean serves as a safe place for Marie. It also allows her to discover and grow as a person. In the novel it says, "A months-old knot inside Marie-Laure begins to loosen" (Doerr 232). Besides being an escape for Marie, what does the ocean symbolize in the novel?
