Von Rumpel devotes much of his time to find the Sea of Flames because he seemed to believe in the power that it holds. Do you believe the gemstone really had magic inside of it or was it a continuous scapegoat for peoples losses? Do you think the majority of Marie-Laure's problems were because of it being in her presence?

I believe in this story, yes the sea of flames contained some magical element. Granted, in a real life situation I do not believe such is possible. The time line of the disappearances or deaths in Marie-Laure's life did begin when the stone became her property. I do not think however it was responsible or sensible in any way for Von Rumple to be searching for such a thing. Wanting a stone of such magnitude is understandable for if worth yet not its ability to continue life, especially with the effects it has on one's loved ones. To want to slow or cease the aging process is irresponsible and cheating death should never be done, given death is a natural process. However, yes, I do think the stone had "magical" qualities.
