In the book, there are many uses of white as symbolism. For instance, Marie-Laure's last name is LeBlanc. In French, the word "blanc" translates to "white." White often represents purity, innocence, virture, and all other positive qualities, which Marie posseses. Secondly, on page 24, a discription of Werner says, "The whiteness of his hair stops people in their tracks. Snowy, milky, chalky. A color that is the absence of color." Doer also writes on page 123, "This snowy-haired dreamer plucked out of the soot." Werner can be symbolized by the color white because he was an orphan with good intentions, who had the misfourtune of being recruited by the Nazis, but by the end of the book, he has regained his pure nature, and proves it by saving Marie.
