In the novel, which character did you admire the most? What were some of the different ways he/she put themselves at risk in order to do what they think is right? Why do you admire this character and how can you relate to them?

Although many characters such as Madame Manec, Marie Laure, Etienne, and Werner put their lives on the line to weaken the Nazis, I admire Frederick the most, because he shows bravery when surrounded by dozens of others who disagree and have demonstrated their violence. After being handed a bucket three times to dump on a suffering prisoner, he states “I will not” (229), overlooking the threat in Bastian’s face that “flares scarlet in the cold” (229). Frederick knows the consequences of his action but refuses to join in the torture. This refusal is what inspires Werner to defy the Nazis himself, hiding the fact that he has found the location of the transmitter used by Etienne and Marie-Laure.

Personally I find that Volkheimer is the most admirable. Sure he is a Nazi that murdered lots of people. But he stuck to his own morals. He did what eh wanted to without second thinking himself. Then in the later years of his life he dropped everything he was doing and went to talk to the sister of the one guy that he was partners within Nazi Germany. He doesn't shy away from the past he fully accepts it and was actively trying to make the present better.

The Most Admirable character is Jutta, although the ending of her story is not great she is one of the characters that sees the big picture right away. By hearing using the radio she sees people's different points of view on the war and then makes her decision about it. The author also used Jutta's character for foreshadowing. Before Werner left to school she told him that it was gonna change him, that he would turn out just like the Hitler youth. Even though Jutta was ignored by Werner for a year, she kept writing letters to him. All throughout the war she stayed strong. I can relate to her when she didn't give up on her brother even though he gave up on her.

I admired Frederick. Although he was considered one of the weakest physically, he seemed to be quite strong mentally. I admired the fact that he was able to stick up for the prisoner while none of the other boys would ever be willing to do something remotely that daring. It was unfortunate that the other boys loathed him. His heart was filled with love, not hate, which enabled him to be able to stick up for what he believed in, instead of acting the way everyone else wanted him to act.
