Do you think if Fredrick had not become brain damaged, him and Werner would have stayed in touch after the war? They seemed to be very important to each other, do you think that would have carried through during the aftermath? Would Fredrick's resentment towards Werner eventually fade?

The relationship of Fredrick and Werner was a complicated one. Werner prioritized success in the army over friendship which is quite apparent in the passages where Werner does nothing when Fredrick is being whipped, or when Werner knows that Fredrick is going to do something stupid but does nothing to prevent it. Fredrick on the other hand seemed to value his friendship with Werner more than anything, which is what got him injured since he refused to leave the camp while his best friend stayed. I don't think they could have stayed in touch any more than they had even without Fredrick's injury. Werner was traveling from place to place, and if Fredrick were able, he would be positioned somewhere as well. As for resentment, I don't believe that Fredrick ever felt resentment towards Werner. He knew that Werner stepping in while he was being whipped wouldn't have solved much. Fredrick's character overall was one that did not allow much containment of toxicity or resentment.

I agree, the relationship was complicated. It seems like they wouldn't have stayed in touch because Werner didn't really hang on to the relationship as much as Frederick did, at the end, right before Frederick gets brain damage, Frederick gives up and tells Werner they don't need to be friends anymore. However, if Werner hadn't died I do believe Werner would have came back to visit Frederick often. Frederick's damage makes Werner appreciate the friendship that they used to have, to make up for his rudeness, I believe Werner would've come back
