If Rudy hadn't had a romantic interest in Liesel do you think he would have been as devoted to their friendship? If he had not had a crush on her all that time, do you think he would have stayed through what he did for as long as he did?

I think that even without a romantic interest in Leisel, Rudy would've stayed along side her as her best friend as long as he did. He asks her many times for a kiss, and even after rejection, he still has the same attitude about her as they go about stealing, delivering laundry, playing soccer etc. Rudy does not seem a very shallow person, and the two friends engage in many other fun activities that don't involve kissing/asking for kisses.

I think that with or with the romantic aspect between the two characters, their desire to become friends would not of changed. The two characters have related qualities that are not of the two having feelings for one another. Both characters are daring and curious, relations that could have been immensely developed throughout the story without any romantic interest.
