Why do you think Zusak chose death as his narrator? He could have chosen Liesel herself, but he didn't, why did he choose a third person narrator?

In my opinion, I think Zusak chose "death" as his narrator, because not only did it add some suspicion to the book as to who the narrator really was, it also was a way of development throughout the story. This narrator (death), created a story pleasurable for the reader. This narrator added back and forth context clues to leave the reader wondering what was going to happen later on in the book, and the only character that could see "the next step" would be death itself.

By having Death as the Narrator, the author was able to put an emphasis on life and how important it is. If the narrator was Liesel, we wouldn't have been able to see this theme or learn about the characters from a bigger point of view. If Liesel was the narrator, we would have only been able to read about characters as Liesel saw them. All though seeing the world through Liesel's eyes would have been interesting, it would have changed the focus of the story.
