Throughout the book, Liesel develops a better relationship with Rosa. Do you think the story would be the same without this relationship, or do you think that this relationship between the two characters, added to her personal growth and development?

Yes helped her learn to tolerate and understand other significant characters. Without her verbal abuse the story wouldn't have turned out the same. Rosa's tough love worked.

Without Rosa the story wouldn't have a hardened parent figure that loves the main character no mater what. This figure contrasts with Hans(the lovable would do anything for main character type person) in a way to make it so most if not all people that read the book could relate to Liesel in that way. Making the book more hospitable for a wider audience. Without Rosa the book wouldn't be the same in the way as there is nobody to keep Liesel on the right track of progressing the plot by visiting the mayors house and finding the stash of books in the first place.
