A major theme in the Book Thief is the power of words. An example of this is shown in the book that Max wrote and gives Liesel ("The Word Shaker"). In the book Max explains that Hitler was able to conquer the world through his words and propaganda. Another example is shown when Hans is able gain liesel's trust and deepen their bond through learning how to read together.

The book thief had a major them of mortality. The main narrator is death for a reason. Death lets us know from the beginning pages that this is a tragic story. Set during World War II and the Holocaust, we witness the deaths of many innocent people. Death tells us that most of the characters we come to understand and care for will end. At the end of the book all but two of the characters talked about are described dying! Most die at once with the bombing. And even the main protagonist ends up dying in the last few pages. The novel shows how we can and will all die so don't act to slow(as Liesel did with Rudy).
