In the book The Book Theif Liesel Meminger has the constant dream of her brother Werner dying on a train. From a psychological standpoint I believe that Liesel natural replayed this dream to create and understand her trauma. Without Werner dying the entire story would have changed completely most importantly Liesel's personality. With Liesel's brother alive there wouldn't been enough space for Max, she won't have had the same friends because she won't have been able to steal, she would have probably never visited the mayor's library, and it's unlikely that she would have the same relationship with her foster parents. Her brother was young and in my personal opinion Liesel would be too much of a caring person to let her brother run wild without her supervision. Showing a major reason why her the death of her brother was a turning point in the book.
