In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the future dystopian society has a government that controls its citizens’ information intake and discourages questioning of the government to the extent of death. As demonstrated in The Book Thief, Nazi Germany crafted a very similar authoritarian system. An important scene in The Book Thief involves book burning, and Guy Montag’s job is to do exactly that. Also, both Montag and Liesel Meminger come to life when they begin to read. Do you recognize any other similarities between these works? Do you think that Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit in some ways as a commentary on the Nazi’s actions and a warning not to repeat them?
