The reader was introduced to Madame Manec as Etienne's housekeeper. She creates her own organization of woman to resist the Germans. Sadly, she falls ill with pneumonia and passes away. She also becomes a friend to Marie-Laure, taking her to the beach regularly. Would Madame Manec be considered a side or main character and would the plot line be greatly affected without her?

Madame Manec would be a main character. She gives open arms to Marie- Laure and her father when they arrive at Etienne's home. The housekeeper and young girl quickly create a special bond. Their relationship becomes a big influence on Marie-Laure's development throughout the story. Primarily, Madam Manec inspires Marie-Laure in becoming a French resistant fighter and delivering the loafs of bread with secret messages, subverting the Germans' power. Although she passes, she left an incredible mark, showing Marie-Laure to be brave and fight for what she believes in.

Although some may say that Madame Manec was a main character, I disagree. However, I do believe that the plot would be impacted if Madam Manec was not in it. A big theme of the book is stories. Through telling different stories in the book the author proves to readers that everyone has a story. To add to this theme the author puts in Madam Manec as a character, but not a main character. The author does this to prove to readers that when 2 people's stories collide (even though it may be for a short period of time), both stories will have an impact because of the collision, no matter how long the collision is.
