Throughout the story, Liesel steals many books, and every one seems to have a significant impact on her. The titles of the books, or the books themselves seem to represent something. For example, “The Last Human Stranger” symbolized Max, because he was like an intruder to the Germans. “The Grave Digger's Handbook” symbolized Liesel's connection to her mother and brother.
